my GSI espresso maker modification

The GSI espresso maker, which is actually a moka pot, is the best way to make espresso while backpacking. Many people may disagree, but, tragically, they're all wrong.

It is light, small, leaves one with an easily packable, dry puck and most importantly, makes the best coffee. I use mine while traveling, backpacking, on climbing trips and working on location. I've use the GSI in Mexico on numerous surf safaris, six months straight while on a rock climbing road trip and extensively on various road trips, rock climbing trips and backpacking trips since my early 20s. That's about 10 years...or so.

The mods are made with 275°F FDA approved polycarbonate fittings and 500°F high purity silicone rubber tubing. It took a bit of experimentation and quite a bit of research to find the right materials.

I have made three of these latest modifications, now that I think about it, probably over the last 2.5 years. I had three broken espresso makers that I modded. One is with a friend, the second started leaking through the over-pressure port and the third I am still using.

These units are used a lot, just about every time I go anywhere overnight. Seriously, the one I have here in front of me has probably been used 100 times.
